Hayley Metcalfe, 37, from Runcorn, knows all too well the depths of grief that accompany losing a baby, but she also knows the profound joy of holding a rainbow baby in her arms. Hayley and her husband Mike were overjoyed when they discovered they were expecting their second child in 2023. Their first pregnancy with their son George had been smooth and uncomplicated, so they had every reason to believe this one would follow the same path. The couple eagerly anticipated growing their family, but their world was shattered when Hayley suffered a placental abruption at just 19 weeks pregnant. Their baby boy, whom they had named Oscar, had died.<\/p>\n

In the summer of 2024, Hayley found herself pregnant again. The news was met with a mixture of delight and sheer terror. “We didn’t want to feel like we were replacing Oscar, but part of us still hoped we’d be able to have another straightforward pregnancy like we had with George,” she explains. The couple was cautiously optimistic, but their fears were realised when at 17 weeks, Hayley was told she had lost the pregnancy due to another placental abruption. “I was still grieving Oscar and now our baby boy Leo was gone too,” Hayley says, her voice heavy with the weight of that double loss. “History repeated itself.” The pain was unimaginable, and the couple felt as though they were trapped in a nightmare from which they couldn’t wake.<\/p>\n

After three years of loss, Hayley began to desperately search for answers. It was here that Hayley found a glimmer of hope. When she fell pregnant again in 2025, the clinic identified a problem with blood flow from her placenta to the baby. From six weeks, she began a daily regimen of blood-thinning injections and aspirin.<\/p>\n

“I was terrified throughout the pregnancy,” Hayley admits. “Every single day I thought the baby was going to die. The further along I got, the more I felt there was to lose, because I already knew exactly what losing a baby felt like.” The anxiety was a constant companion, but the specialist care and monitoring at the Rainbow Clinic provided a lifeline.<\/p>\n

A Ray of Hope<\/h2>\n

In February, the couple’s world changed forever. Hayley gave birth to their daughter, Hope, via C-section at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. “Hope let out her first cry and I burst into tears,” she recalls, the emotion still fresh. “Everything was finally going to be okay.”<\/p>\n

Naming their daughter Hope felt like the only fitting choice. “Naming our miracle daughter Hope felt right after everything we’d been through to bring her safely into the world,” Hayley says. The name is a testament to their journey and a beacon for others who are walking a similar path.<\/p>\n

Hayley’s story is one of resilience and the enduring power of hope. “We will always carry the grief of losing Oscar and Leo with us,” she says, “but Hope is living proof that even after the darkest of storms, rainbows can break through.”<\/p>\n
